The real name of Kodambakkam is Kodalambakkam (Kodal + pakkam)). Kodal is the name of a flower that grew in these parts, as recorded in ancient Tamil literature. The sthalapuranam of the Vengeeswarar temple in Kodambakkam (ancient name Puliyur) provides details of Kodalambakkam, and of Tamil scholars Vageesa Munivar and his guru Paramanandha Munivar, both of whom lived in Kodalambakkam. This showed that Kodambakkam and other parts of Chennai were ancient.
